A Poetic Encounter

A few weeks ago, I took the kids to a McDonald's nearby so they could play in the PlayLand there while I had iced coffee (Yum!). We were there for about 45 minutes. While I was there, I noticed a middle aged Asian gentleman sitting across from me on the other side of the glass panel. He seemed very nice and I didn't pay much attention to him.

The gentleman walked out to the exit and he walked past me first. He handed me a napkin with something he wrote on it. I looked at it as he left and it was a beautiful and sweet poem! He wrote it about me and my kids! How sweet is that?

He wrote:

"He listens with eyes
For she speaks with her hands.
"Voices are beautiful
When one understands.

So I watch as she moves
Bringing understanding to him
With the movement of arms
And with hands that can sing."

He signed his name, Bill Iha, and dated it November 17, 2008.

What a blessing :)

wow! that is really sweet! I have always thought that sign language was a beautiful language! :)

btw... it is dangerous for kids to play in those playlands! they did studies on playlands and found drug needles and drugs and bad, bad stuff!

thank you for sharing that sweet story!
    Love,
    Miss Amanda

SuperAngel, I read those articles too! Ours is a more modern one with no playballs. It's just a big tunnel with a slide :)

And Martha, I googled him and only found that he entered a local poetry contest in a newspaper :)

Wow! First of all the poem is beautiful! Second, that is like something in a movie to have someone watch you and then write a poem!

We began teaching our kids ASL with Signing Time videos but haven't done it lately. I really need to get them back out again and start. Our elderly neighbor lady does not speak or hear and she and I fingerspell and scribble to communicate while she teaches me signs. I know a few from our previous pastor's daughter who is hard of hearing and we had an interpreter at church. I love worship music with sign!

Do you have any recommendations for teaching children to sign (not babies)?
