Children of the Promise

One night, Jessica and I were bible studying together. She showed me this passage she found in Galatians. She had read this entire book of Galatians the night before, how awesome! She found this amazing analogy about law and grace in the story of Abraham. WORTH READING!!

READ Galatians 4:22-31

22For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

23But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.

24Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.

25For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

26But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

27For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.

28Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

29But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

30Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

31So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

Abraham = Father of the Children of Promise
Sarah= Free woman which represents Grace.
Hagar = Bondwoman which represents Law
Ishmael= Flesh
Isaac= Spirit.

The flesh and the spirit war with each other. Eventually, the flesh must depart. The free woman and her son is the heir to the promise God has given to us. Cast out the bondage under the law, and the flesh. They will not be the heirs to the promise.

What a beautiful passage, and we know that everything that happened was a shadow of things to come, and everything is about Christ!

    Charlene,
    I love this passage of Scripture. God showed me this revelation a few years ago. That living by the Law is not the way to receive my inheritance. It is living by faith in His grace, gifting me the righteousness necessary to receive the promises of God in my life. The two cannot live together. We are to cast out the way of bondage and live in the fullness of His grace manifesting His power in our lives.
    What a revelation of freedom in Jesus!
    Thanks for posting this. This could set a lot of people free!

    Amen! I love that. I especially love the fact that even though Hagar and Ishmael had to leave, the Gentiles were blessed through them because of Abraham. PTL!

    I am so very pleased to see how Jessica studies her Bible so in depth. I am blessed to have teens who really WANT to be in the Word and obey.

    Christy Rose, I think the sad thing is that so many people believe their preachers telling them they need to obey the legalism of the OT. We try to share the freedom we have in Christ, but they don't receive it. :O(

    I have been so blind to this :o) I'm saddened that the churches that I've attended were so exclusive with their biblical findings :( Now I've learned to read from the Bible and form my relationship straight from the source :)

    John 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
    I love the liberty we have in Christ! A great reminder, thank you, Miss Charlene.

    Sisterlisa,
    I agree that it is sad that we have heard that we need to add to what Jesus has done for us for God to be pleased with us over and over again. It is difficult for people to receive the Truth of the freedom of Christ. We stumble over the simplicity of the Gospel. But, usually when people come to the end of themselves and realize that all of their efforts aren't making brownie points with God. The truth of Jesus looks very appealing. The Truth will set them free. It is our job to speak Truth and the Holy Spirit's job to reveal it. I just cant see why anyone wouldn't think the message of the Gospel of Grace is not the only Way either.
